Grants and Funding Opportunities for Welsh Businesses
Securing the right funding can make all the difference when it comes to growing, diversifying, or strengthening your business. Across Wales, a range of grant programmes are designed to support different sectors — from farming and food production to retail, leisure and town centre regeneration.
While some schemes are currently closed, new application windows are opening soon. Below, we’ve outlined the main funding opportunities to be aware of, so you can plan ahead and put your business in the best position to succeed.
Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF) Business Grants
The UK Shared Prosperity Fund has been delivered through local county councils, with each area setting its own priorities, eligibility criteria, and funding strands.
SPF business grants have focused on:
- Supporting business start-ups and growth
- Creating and safeguarding jobs
- Driving innovation, carbon reduction and sustainability projects in some counties
Although the schemes are currently closed to new applications, councils may launch further rounds or introduce new opportunities under the SPF framework. It’s worth regularly checking council announcements so you don’t miss out on future funding.
Food Business Accelerator Scheme (FBAS)
The Food Business Accelerator Scheme is designed to strengthen the food processing sector in Wales. It provides a 40% contribution towards capital investment projects that demonstrate clear, measurable benefits to the food industry supply chain.
Eligible costs may include:
- Processing equipment and modernisation of infrastructure
- Specialist software and digital systems
- Minor building works to improve production efficiency
- Carbon-reduction or energy-efficiency projects that reduce environmental impact
Although the last funding round has now closed, a new application window is expected in the coming months. Businesses involved in food processing should start preparing their plans now to take advantage as soon as applications reopen.
Agricultural Diversification and Horticulture Scheme
This capital grant scheme is aimed at farmers and existing horticultural producers in Wales who want to diversify their activities or grow their horticultural business.
- Application window: 29 September – 5 December 2025
- Minimum grant award: £3,000
- Maximum grant award: £100,000
- Grant rate: 40% contribution towards eligible capital investments
To qualify, projects must demonstrate clear and quantifiable benefits to the farm business, such as increasing efficiency, opening new markets, or adding value to existing products. This scheme offers a significant opportunity for Welsh farmers to explore agricultural diversification and strengthen long-term resilience.
Transforming Towns
The Transforming Towns programme aims to bring new life to underused spaces and create thriving communities. Funding is available to support:
- Developing vacant or run-down properties into businesses, housing, leisure or community facilities
- Improving the appearance and viability of existing buildings
- Enhancing premises with innovative services and connectivity, such as high-speed broadband, to attract and retain businesses
By focusing on placemaking and regeneration, this grant helps to revitalise town centres and increase opportunities for local enterprise.
Preparing for Funding Success
Grant funding can be highly competitive, with strict criteria and short application windows. The key to success is being prepared:
- Stay informed about upcoming rounds by following council and government updates
- Plan ahead so you can submit strong applications when opportunities open
- Seek expert advice to ensure your project aligns with eligibility criteria and stands the best chance of approval
